The year is 1327. As representatives of the Franciscan Order and delegates of the Papacy gather at a wealthy
Italian Abbey for a conference that will determine the future of the Church, their mission is suddenly
overshadowed by a growing mystery, one that is spoken of only in whispers: give bizarre murders
which are somehow linked to the secrets of the Abbey's celebrated Library.
The task of solving the mystery falls to the brilliant English Franciscan William of Baskerville (Sean Connery),
aided by his young novice Adso of Melk (Christian Slater). But before William can complete his investigation, the
Abbey is visited by his old antogonist, the Inquisitor Bernardo Gui (F. Murray Abraham). The powerful
Inquisitor is determined to root out heresy by torture and the stake, and if William the hunter persists in his search,
he will in turn become the hunted. But as Bernardo Gui prepares to light the funeral pyres, William and Adso return
to the labyrinthine library, and discover the extraordinary truth.......
