A Set of Seven Unproduced Star Trek: The Original Series Story Treatments
Hiya, folks.
If you’re like me, you love to delve into the background of things, to read early drafts of a film or television show to see the changes as they occur. And, as in the case of these seven unused story submissions from early Trek writers, also to think about what might have been . . .
Up for bid is a photocopy of seven unused story submissions that were made to Gene Roddenberry for episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series.
All were approved as story ideas before being written into these drafts, so Roddenberry was at least interested in the concepts.
One, "Rock-a-Bye-Baby or Die," would have made a terrific show as-is (maybe with a new title?). The rest needed tweaking, as all stories submitted to the producers did back then, I'm sure.
The treatments are all complete, and most tell their stories in beat form: the teaser, acts one through three, and then the final act. All were hand-typed nearly 40 years ago, keep in mind, but the pages are all nicely readable.
The package includes:
"Joanna" by D. C. Fontana - 16 pages
Famous original treatment that became "The Way To Eden" after much revision. This plot is much different; no trippy songs, and the writer expressly forbids the use of the word "Hippies". The story featured Dr. McCoy's estranged daughter, who Kirk goes after, of course.
"Rock-A-Bye-Baby or Die" by George Clayton Johnson - 11 pages
The Enterprise herself is inhabited by an ever-growing child who sees Kirk as Father. This story would have been a terrific addition to the series. Very interesting, and very touching.
"Shol" by Darlene Hartman
Uhura, Chekov, and Scotty are killed by a mystical entity on an alien planet; will Kirk break the Prime Directive to resurrect them?
"Perchance to Dream" by JM Winston - 9 pages
Kirk and crew battle a culture addicted to virtual reality who try to take over the ship.
"The Godhead" by John Meredyth Lucas - 16 pages
Kirk plans to sacrifice the Enterprise and her crew to save the galaxy from destruction at the hands of a group of eons-old scientists' experiments.
"The Lost Star" by John Meredyth Lucas - 29 pages
A hidden solar system has trapped the Enterprise forever unless our heroes can change the mind of the first race that evolved in the galaxy, a race that gave up it's humanity long ago.
"The Joy Machine" by Theodore Sturgeon - 15 pages
The crew encounters a planet of pleasure-drug addicts whose allotment of pleasure is based on how much work they do. The addiction is one that even McCoy can't cure. The ending to this one is odd: Spock in a mosh pit, bouncing happily with the rest of the crew (?).
The treatment package comes three hole punched with two new brass tabs. Hollywood custom is that the center hole remains unfilled. E-mail with questions.
