Up for sale is a large new print of an incredible 1896 photograph of Sarah Bernhardt. Sarah Bernhardt (October 22, 1844 – March 26, 1923) may well have been the greatest actress of the nineteenth century. She was the illegitimate child of a well-known courtesan. Sarah Bernhardt supported herself as both an actress and courtesan in her early days. By the early 1860s she was starring in burlesque and comedy performances. Within a few years she was in demand all over the continent in many serious dramatic rolls. She also was one of the early stars of the movies. She frequently toured the United States and was in San Francisco during the great earthquake of 1906. France awarded her the Legion of Honor.
Perhaps Mark Twain said it best: “There are five kinds of actresses: bad actresses, fair actresses, good actresses, great actresses -- and then there is Sarah Bernhardt.
