MARGOT FONTEYN A Biography by Gordon Anthony Introduction by Ninette de Valois Edition: First Edition Binding: Hardcover Publisher: Phoenix House, London Date Published: 1950 Description: Tall 8vo; 132pp; Color frontis and other illustrations in B/W. Printed on glossy art paper. Original purple cloth, now unevenly faded, due to poor dust jacket. But, the dj is there. Fairly Good overall and contents Very Good. This book contains 60 studies in monochrome, with a colour frontispiece, selected from those taken by Gordon Anthony from the earlier days of Miss Fonteyn's career with the Sadler's Wells Ballet, at the age of 15, up to her creation of the part of Dulcinea for Miss de Valois' Don Quixote in 1950. The descriptive captions to the pictures have been written both from Mr. Anthony's personal experience over this decade and a half and from contemporary critics, and show the interesting progress of a young dancer to the pinnacle of fame. An appreciation of Miss Fonteyn is contributed by Mr. Anthony's sister, Miss Ninette de Valois. Included in the book are many roles created by Margot Fonteyn in such ballets as Orpheus and Eurydice, Baiser de la Fee, Apparitions, Dante Sonata, Nocturne, Horoscope, The Wise Virgins, A Wedding Bouquet, The Wanderer, The Quest, Comus, Hamlet, etc. Among the classics represented are Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Casse Noisette. Of Gordon Anthony, the Ballet Annual, 1950, said that he "is the best known of all ballet photographers. One reason for his success is his great technical knowledge of the dance, which enables him to choose exactly the movements he knows will make a perfect photograph. His volumes of photographs form a record of great documentary value. “Mr. Gordon Anthony,” agrees the Sunday Times, "is the leading ballet photographer", and, said The New Statesman, "he is the most satisfying photographer of the ballet".
