Here is a new print of what many consider one of the most important theater posters of all time. New Year’s Day, 1895, Alphonse Mucha, a 34 year old Czech artist living in Paris, delivered this poster. Sarah Bernhardt was already recognized as one of the greatest actresses of the time. A few weeks earlier Mucha had accepted the commission for a poster of her current play Gismonda. Convention quickly flew out of the window. The original poster was huge (nearly life size) and the dimensions (long and narrow) very unusual. Quickly, Mucha became Bernhardt’s favorite—even designing jewelry, costumes and stage sets for her. The commissions rolled in and Mucha was a true rock star of the art world. He eventually left Paris and returned to Czechoslovakia. On this poster, Sarah Bernhardt is featured standing on a pedestal, turned to the right. Her beautiful, ornate gown tumbles down the pedestal, nearly covering the theater name—“Theatre de la Renaissance”. So famous was her name that the branch she holds in her right hand obscures the word “Sarah”. “Gismonda”, the name of the play, is done in a mosaic near the top. We have other Mucha works in our store and we have quite a few Sarah Bernhardt prints and photographs. Use the search instructions below to view each group. Alphonse Maria Mucha (1860-1939) is considered one of a handful of artists who created what later came to be known as the French Art Nouveau movement. As the world moved from the nineteenth to the twentieth century there was a new aesthetic—and Mucha’s name is, arguably, among the most important of that period. What Mucha, Beardsley and others achieved was the integration of art into the lives of “the common man”. Everything—including commercial applications—can be made more beautiful. Advertisements—particularly posters—even the labels of products could be beautiful. When Mucha died in 1939, the world he left us was decidedly more beautiful, both because of what he did and his tremendous influence on others. Ironically, he died of a heart attack just a short time after The Nazi Invasion of Czechoslovakia and after the Gestapo had questioned him. This is one of the world’s greatest and most influential posters and now you can have an affordable version of it. Mucha fans will love it. Sarah Bernhardt fans will love it. This print is on a high-quality 100# glossy text paper. The actual image measures 5.5” (w) X 16.5” (h). The paper is 8.5” (w) x 17” (h). Therefore, it has a small border to allow for framing. When matted, this size is perfect for a standard 16” x 20” frame, a manageable size for a variety of decorating purposes. The condition of this item is new. SAVE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES!!
