Chiseled Crown
I’ll need a temporary stone—
One placed above my head:
For when I’m sleeping all alone,
Sealed in my nether bed,
That granite, glazed, with furrowed dates
(One of birth, one of death),
Will stand among some other slates
(When I no more have breath),
Erected when my final dreg
Becomes a crumb of crust,
Or ’til God cracks it like an egg
And lifts me from the dust.
