Hank's Hidin'
If I had “Luke the Drifter’s” blood
A-runnin’ through my veins,
I’d often be misunderstood
By “Jennies,” “Jills,” . . . and “Janes.”
For they just wouldn’t understand
My demons deep inside.
Unless I’s playin’ with my band,
Sometimes I’d have to hide.
“But where is he?” they’d want to know
Each time I’s out of sight;
“Is he out bumblin’ on Skid Row,
Or with someone tonight?
(For if I wore his same last name,
They’d swear I had a fling!)
Or else—he’s at some poker game
And losin’ everything? . . .”
“Oh, no! Not Hank! It isn’t true!
This time you gals are wrong:
For Hank was feelin’ kind of blue;
He's writin' a new song."
