Looking Behind And Not Ahead
Across the prairie fast he rode:
For back in town an episode
Had taken place near the saloon
That left one dead that night in June.
A posse would be forming soon:
To chase this outlaw, on the run,
Who rode beneath the moon and sun.
And when his horse was needing rest,
He briefly stopped then onward pressed. . . .
“They should be three miles back,” he guessed.
“If I can keep this steady pace
Then never will they see my face:
For while the posse sleeps real tight,
I’ll keep on riding through the night
And that way I’ll stay far from sight.”
But—his canteen was getting low:
A waterhole was nearby, so
He stopped his steed . . . and filled his can. . . .
When he looked up the fight began. . . .
Again, Matt Dillon got his man.
