redbrickmusic Store "8 MILE" This is an auction for a color copy of the ENTIRE movie script from the movie. Signatures are from the following cast and crew: Eminem ... Jimmy 'B-Rabbit' Smith Brittany Murphy ... Alex SUMMARY At its heart, 8 Mile is a very conventional motion picture. By applying the traditional sports formula to hip-hop music, it manages to extend a familiar plot structure into a new arena. So, instead of the climactic struggle taking place in a boxing ring or on a baseball field, it takes place in a club where two rappers battle it out to see who takes home the crown. And, as is usually the case with a well made sports movie, you don't have to appreciate the particular sport in order to enjoy the movie. 8 Mile has not been made solely with fans of hip-hop music in mind. 8 Mile has a grim, gritty feel. The camera captures the seedier quarters of Detroit in a way that will do nothing for the city's tourist industry. This stark portrait of urban decay echoes images we have seen of bombed-out cities like Beirut and Sarajevo. Sunshine is at a premium; most of the scenes take place indoors, or outside during the night or under cloud cover. There aren't many smiles, either, or, for that matter, many reasons to smile. The people in this film are impoverished and struggling to make ends meet. In order to pay the rent, they have to hope that they win at bingo. Sex isn't about love; it's about surcease and forgetting, if only for a moment. For the most part, the blacks are gang-bangers and the Caucasians are white trash. The controversial and high-profile rap artist Eminem plays Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith Jr., a worker at an automobile factory whose real passion is hip-hop. He's a master rhymer, but, upon entering a competition, he is overcome by stage fright. One day, he hopes to earn enough money to make a demo tape, but that day seems far off. In the meantime, he struggles through his daily life, living in a trailer with his mother (Kim Basinger) and stealing the occasional moment with his trampy girlfriend, Alex (Brittany Murphy). Then, one day, B-Rabbit gets a chance at redemption by taking on the current champion in a rap contest. It is an opportunity he cannot pass up. Formulaic movies can work if they are well-made, and 8 Mile qualifies. The movie's generally downbeat tone is relieved by the failsafe of a triumphant ending, but, along the way, the filmmakers aren't afraid of showing blue-collar life as it really is. Also, in an intriguing switch, the black/white racial division works in reverse. 8 Mile is about a white guy trying to make it in a world dominated by African Americans. B-Rabbit's audience is black, making skin color the first obstacle he has to overcome. We have seen this theme explored before, but not from this angle. From an acting standpoint, the real question is whether Eminem can carry a movie. The fact that the screenplay for 8 Mile is semi-biographical helps; it doesn't require the star to stretch his range too far. Nevertheless, Eminem acquits himself admirably. He understands that acting isn't all words and gestures; it involves body language and eye contact. This is not a great performance, but it's solid and free of affectations, and light years better than the recent efforts of acting wannabes like Mariah Carey and Britney Spears. The supporting cast is adequate, although Kim Basinger has one scene in which she goes painfully over-the-top. Although Eminem may be 8 Mile's standard-bearer, this is very much a Curtis Hanson film. B-Rabbit is in nearly every scene, but Hanson's directorial touch in omnipresent. In many ways, the movie is just one big cliché, but Hanson's style gives it more weight and heft than it might otherwise have. This is no L.A. Confidential, but it's an effective effort, and fans of hip-hop in general (and Eminem in particular) will be pleased. All scripts are sent and packaged extremely well ideal for collectors.
