To Be A Star
’Though he may sing and pick a straight guitar,
He’ll never be a country music star;
He doesn’t qualify to go that far:
For he won’t sing a ballad through his nose;
He never wears the gaudy, glittering clothes
(Like all the greats do) anywhere he goes.
He never uses honky-tonks as themes;
In fact, he doesn’t even drink. It seems
That he won’t go to any wild extremes.
He sings deep from his diaphragm and he
Has been compared with men like Bing Crosby—
But not with Hank, Carl Smith or Ernest T.
And ’though he sings of love and broken hearts,
No sooner will he make the country charts
Than any composition of Mozart’s.
But—who’s that singing on the radio?
They’re playing him on stations that I know;
So far, I’ve heard him three times in a row!
